Korchnoi in January 1978
The 1978 World Chess Championship match between the world champion, 27-year-old Anatoly Karpov, and the winner of the candidates competition, 47-year-old Viktor Korchnoi, took place from July 18 to October 18, 1978 in Baguio (Philippines).
Karpov received the right to play in the match as the reigning world champion (in 1975 he received the title without playing due to the refusal of Bobby Fischer). Korchnoi, who by that time was a stateless person (he left the USSR in 1976 and was deprived of citizenship), received the right to play in the match as the winner of the 1977 candidates matches, where Korchnoi beat Tigran Petrosyan, Lev Polugaevsky and Boris Spassky.
The rules of the match: a game of up to 6 wins without limiting the number of games, in case of defeat, the champion has the right to a rematch.
The chief arbitrator is Lothar Schmid (FRG), since September 28 — Miroslav Filip (Czechoslovakia). During the match, Soviet grandmasters Igor Zaitsev, Yuri Balashov, Lev Polugaevsky and Mikhail Tal assisted Karpov as second coaches. Korchny was assisted as second coaches by English grandmasters Raymond Keen[1] and Michael Steen[1] and Israeli (former Soviet) chess player Yakov Murei[1].

Match progress
The first seven games ended in a draw. On August 3, Karpov won the first victory with white in the open version of the Spanish game, but on August 10, Korchnoi also equalized the score in the match with white — 1:1.
Karpov successfully spent the second half of August, winning the 13th, 14th and 17th games, and two of them were black - 4:1. Karpov won the 13th and 14th games that were postponed on the same day, August 20. On September 13, Korchnoi White won his first victory in a month, reducing the gap to two wins — 4:2. This was followed by 5 draws in a row, and on September 29, in the 27th game of the match, Karpov, who had not won for more than a month for 9 games, brought the score to 5:2 with black. However, at that moment the advantage passed to Korchny: he won the 28th, 29th and 31st of the game, the score became 5:5. The situation was reminiscent of the final match of the contenders in the autumn of 1974, when Karpov led 3-0 after the 17th game (the match was played from 24 games), but then Korchnoi managed to win two games and reduce the gap, but the last three games ended in a draw and Karpov became the winner of the match.
On October 17, in the 32nd game of the match, Karpov white in the defense of Pirts - Ufimtsev got a big advantage, the game was postponed the next day, but Korchnoi surrendered on October 18 without finishing. Thus, Karpov won the match with a score of 6:5 (with 21 draws), retaining the title of world champion. By that time, it was the longest match for the title of world champion (in terms of time). 15 of the 32 games of the match were postponed, especially a lot of postponed games were in the second half of the match, starting in September.
In the autumn of 1981, in Merano (Italy), the rivals met again in a match for the title of world champion.
