Chernobyl

Yo What's up How many of you knew about this deadly Nuclear disaster?

If you didn't
I'm gonna say all about it
so first Chernobyl was a deadly Nuclear disaster

To know how it happened spare me but i will have to say how a Nuclear powerplant works first

nuclear reactor produces and controls the release of energy from splitting the atoms of certain elements. In a nuclear power reactor, the energy released is used as heat to make steam to generate electricity.
that is how it works in SIMPLE words
oh and the components of a Nuclear reactor
Fuel

Uranium is the basic fuel.
Moderator
Material in the core which slows down the neutrons released from fission so that they cause more fission.
Control rods or blades

These are made with neutron-absorbing material such as cadmium, hafnium or boron, and are inserted or withdrawn from the core to control the rate of reaction, or to halt it ( to stop a nuclear disaster }
there are many more
but i m speeding things up
you can research about them

so first what is Chernobyl

It was a nuclear Powerplant located in USSR ( currently Ukraine)
it had 4 powerplants
The disaster happened in 1986 in the 4 powerplant which was added recently
What happened was this

  • In the event of a blackout or loss of power to the plant, the RBMK reactor will stop pumping water through the core.

  • A backup set of diesel-fuelled generators kick in after 60 seconds in such an instance -- but this timeframe risks putting the reactor in danger.

  • Thus, the test was hoping to show how an RBMK reactor could bridge the 60 seconds and keep pumping cool water into the system by using spare power generated as the plant's turbines slowed down.

  • The test was originally scheduled for April 25 but was delayed for 10 hours by power grid officials in Kiev.

  • The delay meant a team of nightshift staff would have to run the test -- something they had not been trained to do.

  • To perform the test, the reactor had to be put into a dangerous low-power state.

  • It's not like putting ur PC TO SLEEP MODE.

  • It cannot be returned to its usual power state quickly However, the team in the control room at Chernobyl attempted to do just that and disregarded the safety protocols in place

  • 1:23:40 a.m the emergency stop button was pressed by chief of the night shift Alexander Akimov. This forces all of the control rods back into the core.
The control rods should decrease the reaction but because they are tipped with graphite, they actually cause the power to spike even more Over the next five seconds the power increases dramatically to levels the reactor cannot withstand The caps on the top of the reactor core weighing more than 750 pounds begin to literally bounce in the reactor hall.

Then, at 1:23:45 a.m., the explosion occurs.

  • FACT Chernobyl released 400X times more than Hiroshima ...

  • Just imagine

  • There are other disasters like Fukushima and kyshtym disasters

  • But they will come in next blog post

  • Till theN Bye!
