sorry but how do I add a friend?

@jholmstrom There is not a friend system on Lichess, but you can follow and/or message people. Recently (not really) the messaging has changed to lichess inbox to make chatting with other users easier! Also, you can get to know people in the lichess tournaments lichess.org/tournament

@jholmstrom How is there not a friend system? I have a pop-up in lower right that says 0 friends online, and when a friend does log in, it shows friends logged in.

They may appear as friends, but when you FOLLOW someone they appear in the FRIENDS category.
